Time for Me

You guys, when did it become so hard to find time to do things for me? That’s a rhetorical question!  I know exactly when it happened. The second I had my daughter my life became all about her, spending every second I could with her and letting the things I love and care about take a back seat.

It may sound silly to some, but working out and eating healthy truly is a passion of mine. I definitely eat my fair share of chips and cookies but the way I feel when I am eating well and getting my sweat on dramatically changes. I have so much more energy, I am more joyful and enjoy my own company more (so it must be nice for my husband too). The funny thing is, it is so easy to slip into bad habits. It’s so easy to stop working out or skip meal prep for play time and cuddles. I am 100% guilty of this, pretty much since I had Emerson 17 months ago (today). I have had a few waves of being good, but overall I have been real bad and honestly taken every second I could to be with her or at night with my husband for a couple minutes of solace.

It was catching up with me. I was feeling sluggish and hated the thoughts going through my head when I looked in the mirror.

I follow all the Tone It Up girls and always say I am going to do it but never actually do. Well, this week, I made an effort to pack my food for the day and get a sweat session in. I can honestly say, after only 3-4 days I feel like a different person. My cravings for crappy food have subsided, I want to eat my salad and my energy level is significantly improved. It gives me hope and makes me excited to continue to prioritize this in my life. If I am not working out the way I would like to, the least I can do is eat well and try to squeeze in a workout at some point during the day.

For workouts, I have been using the Aaptiv app and it’s been great.  Essentially, you pick the type of workout you want (and there is a BIG variety) and there are coaches/instructor guiding you through the whole “class.” So far I have done 2 treadmill workouts, 1 outside running workout and a strength. It just gives me that extra motivation to jump on the treadmill or do an extra strength routine. I am doing a 30 day trial and will give a full recap at the end.

I am trying to remember to post more often on Instagram and share my story on Instastories which has been fun and holds me accountable. If you want to follow along, please do, my handle is @mattiemooves. I would love to connect with you and share our journey together. Give me the link to your insta below and I will be sure to follow you :).

2017 Kelly Brush Ride

This weekend we went up to Vermont for the Kelly Brush Bike Ride to raise money for the Kelly Brush Foundation. I have been doing this ride for years and love being involved in the Foundation. Every year at the ride I have so much fun and see all my old friends from the skiing community.
Kelly Brush Ride
This year I almost didn’t go because the Tone It Up Tour was in Boston and they had asked me to Volunteer. I was so close to skiing the bike ride to go to the Tour. I mean, I would be able to meet amazing women, work out, drink Rose and experience something new. Now that I write that, I am questioning my decision!

At the end of the day, I wanted to be with my family. Vinnie and Emerson were going no matter what and I didn’t want to spend the whole weekend alone. Sue me, I am addicted to my family!

Kelly Brush Ride

I am sad I missed the Tone It Up tour, but I had a lot of fun riding with my sister, Vinnie and longtime friend, Annie. We cycled 50 miles together and managed to laugh the whole way. My butt and neck are sore but endurance wise, I managed!

I expected to lose steam and have to really dig deep but I was ok. Even though I am not in the shape I would like to be, I am not as bad as I sometimes think I am!

Kelly Brush Ride

This year the Kelly Brush Foundation reached a whole new level of awesome. They had over 800 riders and raised $500,000 for people with spinal cord injuries and spinal cord prevention. That is truly incredible and a huge milestone. I was really honored to be a part of the day and happy I made the trip to Vermont to be with my friends and family on such a special day.

15 Minute Total Body AMRAP Workout

Before Emerson, fitting in my daily workout was a huge priority.  I obviously had a lot of other things that I cared about and prioritized, but working out and running was top of the list. Now, there are a lot of other things that take precedence which has been a hard thing for me to come to terms with, but also just a fact of life. I am working hard to fit in my workouts but sometimes that extra half hour in bed or moment on the couch is too good to pass up!

This morning, I had to drum up motivation to workout from all aspects of life including scrolling Instagram, looking at the #tiuteam hashtag, running on the treadmill for 10 min (then stopping because I had to go the bathroom #momlife) and doing the new Tone It Up Beach Ballin’ workout. Nothing really got me excited or sweaty so I made up my own AMRAP (as many reps as possible) workout inspired by Jayme [@fit_n_clean_mama].

15 MIN TOTAL BODY AMRAP WORKOUT

This did the trick. Put me up against a clock and I’ll get to work! I made it through 4.5 rounds with about 20-30 second breaks between each set. Try it out and let me know many sets you complete!

My nutrition has been off lately and it 💯 affects my energy and drive to workout. I needed a good workout this morning to help me reset. Because I refuse to let a couple bad days completely throw me off. I refuse to give up on my goals. I refuse to quit.

This journey is not easy. I feel like every step forward ends up with 2 steps back but I keep chipping away. I truly believe one day I will reach a place I am happy with and embrace that lifestyle whole-heartedly.  I just have to stay positive, never give up, and follow my own path and my own heart. Too often I let what others think affect how I act and make decisions. Only I can get myself to where I want to be.

Body Burn by Ray

This weekend I went to Body Burn by Ray. It was my first real group fitness class I have attended since having Emerson. I left feeling energized, excited and reminded of why I love to work out. Since having Emerson my life has changed, for the better, but it’s been hard to balance all the things that I used to love to do. For instance, fitness and working out have fallen to the wayside due to taking care of Emerson, working (you got to pay the bills) and quite frankly, simply being exhausted leaves me less motivated. But at BodyBurn I was reminded of why I love working out and why I have made it a priority in my life for so long. It’s refreshing and exciting! I hope I can take this feeling and use it to motivate me to prioritize working out either by waking up a little earlier or to squeeze in something for 20 minutes at the end of the day instead of sitting on the couch.

Body Burn by Ray

So let me tell you a little bit about Body Burn. It’s a cardio, strength workout in a Tabata type format in a club-like setting. The lights are dimmed (ie: the sub-par photos) and the music is loud which really helps allow you to focus on your workout and not compare yourself to anyone else in the class. The workout format is comparable to Orange Theory or Barry’s Boot Camp except the cardio machines are all different and the group aspect is during the strength. The class is a total of 48 minutes, there are 12 cardio machines and you use each one for twice before moving on to the next machine. In between each cardio you do a 40 second strength exercise. Every day they focus on a different body part for the strength segment. So, on Monday they might focus on abs, on Tuesday arms/upper body, Wednesday legs/lower body, etc. The workouts are planned out months in advance and are strategically designed to maximize muscle building and fat burning.

Body Burn by Ray strength

As a newbie to the class everyone was incredibly helpful and supportive they took the time to explain some of the cardio equipment before I got on it even if it meant cutting into one of their own 40 second cardio blocks. All the cardio equipment is motorless so you have to propel them forward, making the workout as hard (or as easy) as you want it to be. By far the hardest, and coolest, machine was the treadwall. Its a moving rock wall you climb! It was awkward at first but once I got the hang of it really fun!

Ray, the owner and creator, taught the class. You can tell by his energy and attitude that he is extremely passionate and dedicated to bringing health and fitness to every body that walks through the doors. I really enjoyed the entire workout and experience and plan on going back as much as I can. They are located in Belmont which is a little tough for me to get to all the time, but the workout is worth the effort of getting there. I hope to go back soon!

Quick Total Body Playmat Workout

I am so sore.

I never believed it would be so hard to find time to workout with a new born. I thought, all they do is sleep and eat, I can workout while they are sleeping. Little did I know, it is not that easy. There are so many things to do once there is a moment of silence… like take a nap yourself, finally make some real food instead of having another handful of chips or another Kind Bar, maybe do laundry, attempt to do the dishes (quietly). And once all that is done, she wakes up!

Needless to say I have been having a hard time fitting any sort of a workout in. (The two running races I have in October are going to be interesting. But I keep telling myself I have some to figure out how to train). I have gone for a few runs while family was around so they could watch Emerson. But they are few and far between.

Emerson On The Playmat

Yesterday I decided it was time to do a real workout. I went for a long walk with my Moms Walking Group and then planned on putting on a Tone It Up workout and following along. Trying to set up the video to follow turned out to be a real challenge between finding the video I wanted to do and keeping Emerson entertained so I bagged it. Instead I just started doing squats while Emerson laughed at me on the playmat. Once I started doing a little something, I kept adding more moves and trying to get my heart rate up. It felt great! I only ended up doing one round before Emerson got too fussy but I intend on doing 2 full rounds of the whole workout.

The workout didn’t last long, but it felt so good and I am SORE today. Doing a little bit is better than doing nothing!

Weekly Workout Recap

I hope everybody had a fabulous weekend! Mine was super restful and relaxing after a long few weeks of travel. I’ve been traveling for work and also went down to Myrtle Beach to visit my cousins and her 4 kids. It was so nice to go to the beach and have 80° weather every day.

This weekend we were really lazy and relax all Saturday. On Sunday we went to my grandparents house to watch the patriots game, per usual!

And towards the end of the game I left and drove up to watch my sister play her last fall ball lacrosse game. It was fun to hang out with my family and see my sisters.

As for my weekly workouts, I was pretty tired after traveling so much so I felt like it wasn’t a great week but I still managed to do something almost every day.

Weekly Workout Recap

Monday: rest – I was exhausted from my travel home

Tuesday: 30 minute run and 1 hour C2 CPY class

Wednesday: 45 minute run

Thursday: 1 hour C2 CPY class

Friday: 45 minute run

Saturday: 1 hour C1 CPY class, Cyc Spin Class – it was a charity ride to raise money for Cupids Run

Sunday:  5.7 mile run for Charity Miles Challenge

My work out goals for this week are to run 3 times, do yoga 2-3 times as well and try to incorporate 1-2 toning routines. I’m in a pretty good routine of getting my workouts in. My biggest challenge is my diet so I’ve packed healthy meals and snacks for today and I’m really ready to refocus and recommit on eating lean clean and green.

What are your goals for the week?

A Surprise 60th and Weekly Workouts [9.30.15]

It’s Monday already?? This weekend we traveled down to NYC to surprise Vinnie’s aunt for her 60th birthday party. It was a total success, she was completely surprised. We all hide outside and when she walked up to the house we jumped out and said surprise. It was perfect! And then, the Italian fiesta ensued… There was endless amounts of food and drink, overwhelming love and a late night poker game.

I didn’t take a ton of pictures because I was trying to be in the moment. I have not spent a ton of time in NY with Vinnie’s aunts and cousins. They typically come up to Vermont. It was so fun to see them in their element, so comfortable, loving, happy and together. I feel very honored and privileged to be welcomed with such open arms into their family.

Because of work and traveling this weekend, I didn’t work out as much as I wanted to this week, below is the weekly recap.

Weekly Workout Recap

Monday: Tone It Up Insane Cardio routine

Tuesday: AM: 4.5 mile run, PM: 1 hour C2 yoga class and some ab and shoulder toning via Tone It Up

Wednesday: 30 minute treadmil run, booty toning

Thursday: 1 hour vinyasa yoga

Friday: 4 mile run, booty toning

Saturday: rest

Sunday: rest

Last week, I wanted to run 3-4 times and practice yoga 2-3 times and I accomplished that! It’s funny because I still feel like I didn’t work out enough. But, it’s nice to look back and realize I accomplished what I set out to. It’s a good reminder to celebrate the small victories and not always look at the negative.

My goals for this week are the same as last week,  run 3-4 times and practice yoga 2-3 times. This week, I also want to include toning exercises 2-3 times.

What are your goals for the week? Did you get all the workouts in you wanted to last week?

Weekly Workouts [9.21.15]

Good Monday Day to you all!

I hope you all had a fabulous weekend. Mine went by so fast. On Saturday night I could of sworn it was only Friday. I was so bummed when I realized I only had one more morning to sleep in.

This weekend, I spent a lot of time with my family, watching my sister play lacrosse. It was fun and a rare occasion to have all the siblings together (plus cousins and aunts and Lofo).

One big thing from the weekend is that I officially finished all the teacher training for my yoga certification. I completed the extension program that CorePower offers and now all I have left to do is get a job! CorePower has auditions the second Wednesday of every month and I’m worried I’m not gonna be here in October or November so I’m going to have to wait until December which totally sucks. I might try to get a job somewhere else in the mean time. I don’t want to lose everything I’ve learned or lose my enthusiasm and excitement to teach.

In other news, I want to start keeping track of my work outs for the week so I not only hold myself accountable but also so I can refer back to them when I need a little extra motivation or want to see what I was doing on a specific week. Feel free to join me! Here goes the first week…
Weekly Workout Recap

Monday: 4 mile run, 15 min. arm and ab workout, 1 hour C2 yoga class.

Tuesday: 20 minutes of total body toning

Wednesday: 6.5 mile run, 3 hrs of Teacher Training Extensions

Thursday: rest day – traveling for work

Friday: 40 minute run, C2 1 hour Vinyasa Flow, Tone It Up 24 min toning

Saturday: 5.5 mile run, 3 hrs of Teacher Training Extensions

Sunday: taught yoga at Corepower; rest day

My goals for this week are to run 3-4 times and practice yoga 2-3 times. And (as always) I am going to focus on eating lean, clean, and green…avoiding (come on, willpower) processed foods and all the junk/snacks/baked goods around the office.

What are your workout goals this week?

A Bike Ride and A Wedding

This weekend was a whirlwind! And, I wouldn’t change it one bit.

Friday Vinnie and I packed up the car and drove to Burlington, VT and spend the afternoon walking around and enjoying the beautiful views. I LOVE it up there. The scenery is incredible, there are so many great options for food and drink and the people are so care-free and love being outside. IMG 1632

Farmhouse Tap & Grill
We went to a restaurant called Farmhouse Tab & Grill for a drink. It was so fun, they had a cute outside beer garden in the back of the place.
Farmhouse Tap & Cider
I ordered the Urban Farm Fermentory Amalgam which is a Kombucha like Cider – it was so good! Not too sweet, which is key!

On Saturday we woke up super early to go ride in the Kelly Brush Foundation Annual Bike Ride. This was the 10th Annual ride and they had an incredible turn out. Vinnie and I rode with my mom and my friend, Annie. We biked 50 miles together! It took us just under 4 hours with lots of stops to snack and drink water.

I love red barns. Next year I am going to count how many I see! The views are incredible.

Finished!

After the ride, Vinnie and I hopped in the car and headed 2 hours northeast to celebrate my friend Kristin’s wedding. It was a blast. Kristin looked beautiful and she was beaming, her now husband was smiling the whole time, the venue was amazing and everyone fully enjoyed themselves. They put selfie sticks on all the tables and had props to take pictures with. We took full advantage of it! My favorite picture is the selfie of me and Vinnie with the bride and groom in the background!

A selfie with the bride and groom photo bombing!

It was a great weekend! Lots of friends, celebration and good times!

How was your weekend?

Spring has Sprung

This past weekend we finally saw the first signs of Spring here in Boston.  Sunday was incredibly nice!! I went for a run and could not stop taking pictures, smiling and enjoying  the spring air. I ended up running an extra 3.5 miles because I was having so much fun!

The Charles River was full of  sail boats, the park was full of kids playing soccer and the walking path had rows of people walking, running and biking.

All this nice weather makes me excited to get outside and energized to exercise. I have been looking for that extra push to get in shape and work out. The nice weather is helping and I plan riding this wave as long as I can!
